ANGEL LACE BABY CAP - Two Needle Version

This cap is worked from the top down.
The yarn and needles I use will make a preemie-sized cap.
To make larger sizes, use thicker yarn and needles to suit.
Or you could work the increase rows a few more times, to give a larger number of sts.
Refer to the notes at the end of the pattern re adapting the angel pattern stitch.
Mine is started with an I-cord bobble - see the notes for information.

Materials: 25g (1 ounce) 3 ply baby wool (US fingering)
Add a small amount of a contrast colour if you want the two colour version.

Needles: 3.75 mm (UK 9, US 5)

Abbreviations:
k - knit
p - purl
yf - bring yarn to front of work
yb - take yarn to back of work
pw - purlwise (move the stitches to the other needle without twisting them)
make bobble - (K1, yo, K1) into next stitch, turn and p3, turn and k3, slip first two sts over last knit st.
inc - increase in next stitch
k2tog - knit 2 together
yo - bring yarn to front and over needle to make a stitch
ssk - slip next two stitches separately to right needle, slip left needle into them fron left to right and knit them together.

Notes:
Two-Colour Cap
Work the 4 rows of the lace eyelet stripe in contrast colour 

I-Cord bobble
The cap shown has an I-cord bobble at the top. To work it, start the cap as follows:
Cast on 3 sts and work a few rows of I-cord**. 
Next row: Knit 3 sts, then knit up 3 sts from cast on end of cord.
Continue to work cap as usual.
If you are doing the 2-needle cap, knit up an extra st to give you the 7 sts needed.
**I-cord:
Use double ended needles (the shorter the better).
Cast on 3 sts
*Knit 3, do NOT turn work but slide stitches to the other end of the needle.
Rep from * for length required.

Adapting the Angel Lace pattern stitch.

I have used a 12 st repeat for this version of the pattern, to fit the number of sts I have used for the cap.
The original pattern had a 13 st repeat. It is very easy to add extra sts between the angel motifs. Work out how many angels you want, divide that into the number of stitches you have, and just add extra sts at each side of the angels.

Row 1:   *K3, yf, slip 7 pw, yb, k2*, rep to last st, k1

Rows 3 and 4:   repeat rows 1 and 2
Row 5:   *K6, make bobble, k5*, rep to last st, k1
Row 6:   *P3, yb, slip 7 pw, yf, p2*, rep to last st, k1
Row 7:   *K6, slip point of needle under the 3 long strands and knit the next st, k5*, rep to last st, k1

Row 1:  K1, (inc in next st) 6 times - 13 sts
Rows 2, 4, 6 ,8, 10:  Purl
Row 3:  K1, (inc in next st) 12 times - 25 sts
Row 5:  K1, (inc, k1) 12 times - 37 sts
Row 7:  K1, (inc, k2) 12 times - 49 sts
Row 9:  K1, (inc, k3) 12 times - 61 sts
Row 11: K1, (inc, k4) 12 times - 73 sts
Row 12:  Purl

Work lace eyelet stripe
Row 1: Knit
Row 2: Knit
Row 3: k1, *yo, k2tog, rep from * to end
Row 4: Knit

Work 4 rows in stocking st (stockinette)

Work 14 rows of angel lace pattern stitch (two needle version).

Work 2 rows in stocking st

Work 4 rows of lace eyelet stripe

Work 6 rows in stocking st, dec one st at end of last row (72 sts).

Work k2, p2 rib for 19 rows or until required length.
Cast off (bind off).
