Feather & Fan Baby Cap

This cap can be knitted flat on two needles
or as a seamless circular version.
Patterns are provided for both options.
   
Materials: Baby wool - about 25g will make 1 cap.
Needles: 3.75mm
Gauge: 6 sts = 1" over stocking st

Size: Small Preemie [Preemie, Infant]
10" [12", 15"] around

Abbreviations:
k = knit
p = purl
yo = yarn over (or wool forward)
k2tog = knit 2 together

 
If you want to do a two (or multi) coloured version, change colours at start of Row 3 of pattern.
In the two coloured version pictured above I have changed colour each 4 rows,
but you could work wider stripes by changing colour each 8 rows

 
Two needle version:

Cast on 70 [87, 104] sts

Knit 3 rows
Start pattern st:
Row 1: K1, *(k2tog) 3 times, (yo, k1) 5 times, yo, (k2tog) 3 times* repeat from * to * until 1 sts remains, k1.
Row 2: Knit
Row 3: Knit
Row 4: Purl

Repeat rows 1-4 until work measures 3½" [4¼", 4½"] or desired length, ending after Row 2 of pattern.

Shape top:
Row 1: K1, *(k2tog) 3 times, k5, (k2tog) 3 times* repeat from * to * until 1 sts remains, k1
Rows 2, 4, 6, 8, 10: Purl
Row 3: K1, *k4, k2 tog, k3, k2tog* repeat from * to * until 1 sts remains, k1
Row 5: K1, *k3, k2 tog, k2, k2tog* repeat from * to * until 1 sts remains, k1
Row 7: K1, *k2, k2 tog, k1, k2tog* repeat from * to * until 1 sts remains, k1
Row 9: K1, *k1, k2 tog, k2tog* repeat from * to * until 1 sts remains, k1
Row 11: K1, *k1, k2tog* repeat from * to * until 1 sts remains, k1

Break wool leaving enough to sew the seam and thread it through remaining sts.
Sew seam.

 
Seamless version

Cast on 68 [85, 102] sts
Place a marker to indicate start of round.
Work 3 rounds in garter st (knit 1 round, purl 1 round, knit 1 round)

Start pattern st:
Round 1: *(k2tog) 3 times, (yo, k1) 5 times, yo, (k2tog) 3 times* repeat from * to * end.
Round 2: Purl
Round 3: Knit
Round 4: Knit

Repeat until work measures 3½" [4¼", 4½"] or desired length, ending after Round 2 of pattern

Shape top:
Round 1: * (k2tog) 3 times, k5, (k2tog) 3 times* repeat from * to * to end of round
Rounds 2, 4, 6, 8, 10: Knit
Round 3: * k4, k2 tog, k3, k2tog* repeat from * to * to end of round
Round 5: * k3, k2 tog, k2, k2tog* repeat from * to * to end of round
Round 7: * k2, k2 tog, k1, k2tog* repeat from * to * to end of round
Round 9: * k1, k2 tog, k2tog* repeat from * to * to end of round
Round 11: * k1, k2tog, * repeat from * to * to end of round

Break wool and thread it through remaining sts.
Fasten off.
